May 1st Labor Union unites all workers.
The union, founded on May 1st 2018, grew from the 2016 protests against the diminishing of workers’ rights in the new Labor Code, and later formed the solidarity network “Gyvenimas per brangus” (eng. “Life is too expensive”). G1PS is organized according to the principles of direct democracy, creating an opportunity for the members to get involved in the decision-making and refusing a chairperson’s autocracy. We do not consider employers to be our partners, we seek to fight for workers’ rights without pretending that both sides are equal. We seek not only to defend the existing workers’ rights, but to expand them as well – to strive for shorter, safer and more well-paid work for everyone. We follow emancipatory political practices and promote solidarity and the fight against discrimination based on gender, nationality, skin color, or sexual orientation.
